If the word wool makes you think of a scratchy childhood sweater, the short answer is no, merino is not that wool. The itch you remember has a specific, measurable cause, and merino sits on the comfortable side of it. Here is the science, plus what blending does to push softness even further.
Why old wool itched: micron counts
A fiber's diameter is measured in microns. Human skin generally perceives fibers above roughly 30 microns as prickly, because thick fibers are stiff enough to press into the skin rather than bend against it. Traditional wool sweaters used fibers in that 30-plus range. Merino fibers typically measure between 15 and 24 microns, and fine merino sits under 19. At that diameter the fiber bends on contact instead of poking, which the skin reads as softness.
What blending adds
Fiber fineness is half the story. The other half is the surface of the fabric, which is where a blend earns its keep. In our merino and lyocell blend, fine merino is spun together with TENCEL lyocell, a plant-based fiber with one of the smoothest surfaces in textiles. The lyocell majority forms most of the fabric face, so what touches your skin is predominantly that smooth, cool surface with merino's benefits working underneath. The result is a shirt most people cannot distinguish from premium cotton by feel. It is why the description on our Merino Blend Tee says buttery-soft, and means it.
Merino and sensitive skin
For most people with self-described wool sensitivity, the reaction is mechanical, caused by coarse fibers, not a true allergy. Fine-micron merino resolves the mechanical problem. True lanolin or wool allergies exist but are rare, and heavily processed fine merino carries minimal lanolin. If synthetic fabrics are what irritate your skin, natural fibers are usually the answer rather than the problem; our guide to shirts for sensitive skin goes deeper.
Keeping it soft
Softness is also a care outcome. Heat is the enemy: hot water and tumble drying cause wool fibers to felt and stiffen. Wash cold on gentle, hang dry, and the fabric stays exactly as soft as day one. The full routine is in our guide on how to wash a merino blend shirt.
Frequently asked questions
Is merino wool itchy on bare skin? Fine merino, under about 19 microns, is comfortable directly on skin for the vast majority of people. Blended with lyocell, it is softer still.
Can I be allergic to merino? True wool allergy is rare. Most wool discomfort is a mechanical response to coarse fibers, which fine merino avoids. If you have a diagnosed lanolin allergy, consult your dermatologist.
Is a merino blend as soft as bamboo? They are different kinds of soft. Bamboo is lighter and silkier; the merino blend is smooth with more body. Our comparison of bamboo vs merino shirts breaks it down.
