Is Recycled Polyester Actually Sustainable?

Recycled polyester is the athletic apparel industry's favorite sustainability claim. It shows up on hang tags, in ad copy, and in brand mission statements, usually next to a picture of ocean plastic. The implication is that buying it keeps bottles out of the sea. The reality is narrower, and worth understanding before it changes your next purchase.

What "recycled polyester" actually is

Most recycled polyester, often labeled rPET, is made by melting down plastic bottles and re-spinning the material into fiber. It is a real process and it does use existing plastic rather than virgin petroleum for that step. That is the entire scope of the benefit.

What does not change

Recycling the source plastic does not change the fiber that ends up on your skin. It is still polyester. It still sheds microplastic fibers in the wash, the same as virgin polyester. It still traps odor and relies on a chemical wicking finish that degrades over time. And it is still not biodegradable; a recycled polyester shirt sits in a landfill for the same two centuries a virgin one does, just with a different plastic pedigree. The bottle math doesn't hold up either

Recycling a bottle into fiber is also usually a one-way trip. Plastic bottles are part of a food-grade recycling loop that can turn a bottle back into another bottle repeatedly. Once that bottle becomes a shirt, it can no longer be recycled back into a bottle, and clothing recycling infrastructure is far less developed than bottle recycling. In practice, using bottles for clothing often removes them from a working recycling loop rather than adding a second life.

Why brands lean on it anyway

Recycled polyester lets a brand use the word "recycled" without changing manufacturing costs, fit, or performance. It is a genuinely cheaper sustainability story to tell than switching to natural fibers, because the fabric sourcing and supply chain stay identical.
